1-on-1 Tutoring Support

​​​​​​​​​1-on-1 Tutoring Support

Do you have questions about your course assignments? Our welcoming, multilingual tutors and staff are here to support you and offer the following services:

  • Assist multilingual students with grammar, writing, reading, and conversation in ESL, English, and Spanish classes.
  • Support assignments, projects, and technical reports involving language and Office 365 across all subjects.
  • Improve writing mechanics: punctuation, run-ons, parallel structure, and sentence fragments.​
  • Support test preparation: TEAS Test (English and Language Usage Section) and CBEST (Reading Section).
  • Provide a supportive study environment with free laptops and wireless mice.

How to Meet with a Tutor?

You can meet with our tutors in the following ways:

  • Walk in or make an appointment for tutoring.
  • For online tutoring, please make an appointment via Accudemia. Go to MyGiant Portal and click on "Accudemia Login" as shown below or visit cos.accudemia.net.
  • Watch this tutorial to make an appointment. 
  • Call (559) 737-5369 for assistance.

English Tutoring

  • Monday - Thursday: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Friday: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm​

Spring 2025 Hours Reserved for Evening ESL Program:

  • Monday - Thursday: 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Spanish Tutoring

Spring 2025 Hours:

  • Monday - Thursday: 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm 
  • Thursday: 9:00 am - 10:00 am  ​
  • Friday: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Reading Group

  • ​​​​​Engage in extensive reading with group members or work on specific reading skills during these sessions.

  • You are encouraged to practice reading at ​your own pace.

Conversation Group​

  • Engage in extensive pronunciation and conversation practice with group members. 
  • Discuss interesting daily topics and learn useful expressions for speaking​. 
  • You are encouraged to practice conversation in a supportive environment. ​ 

Skill Group

  • Practice English while learning about computers. 
  • Work on computer skills that are essential for study.
  • Learn and discover useful learning tools that enable you to become an independent language learner.​​​

Friday Fun Day 

  • On the final Friday of each month, we host fun activities for​ learning English while making art, listening to English songs, and playing educational board games.

Are you interested in working with multilingual learners who wan to strengthen their language skills? Join the Language Center. As an embedded or 1-on-1 tutor, you will have the opportunity to develop tutoring skills, grow personally, and build your resume. 

To apply, please prepare the following:

1. Have passed or are passing English 1 with an A or B

2. Enrollment in at least 6 units

3. A completed application form

4. A writing sample 

5. A brief letter of interest

Submit the application, writing sample, and letter of interest to the Language Center Coordinator at johnnyf@cos.edu. Feel free to stop by in person as well.

​​​​​​​​​The Language Center is here to support our faculty. We compiled syllabus language, useful tutorial videos, and teaching tips to provide both faculty and students with easy access to our resources. 


​​Tutorial Support

We offer 1-on-1 language support at Visalia Campus. We assist multilingual students with assignments related to English and Spanish grammar, writing​​​, and the use of Canvas and Office 365 to be successful in your courses. We also offer workshops​ focusing on study, language, and computer skills. Our tutors speak different languages and provide comprehensive support based on students' learning needs. We ensure all students feel they belong to a supportive community. ​


Ideas for Introducing Our​ Support to Your Classes

  • Integrate the following syllabus language into your syllabus or offer extra credit for center visits
  • Design a campus scavenger hunt for the first week of class
  • Ask us for a Zoom or in-person class visit
  • Bring your class to the center
  • Partner with us for academic support, such as workshop

The Language Center offers 1-on-1 tutoring in grammar, writing, and other language skills. Whether you are trying to understand the class assignment or complete it using Office 365, our tutors are here to support you. COS International Club

COS International Club

​​​​​​​​​​The International Club is an organization led by COS students who are passionate about languages and cross-cultural understanding. The club hosts bi-weekly events such as snack day, youtube day, movie day, and philanthropy day. The event is open to everyone, and we welcome all attendees to share their cross-cultural experiences and life moments.
