​​​​Fire Academy Physical Agility Test

​40 applicants from the application review will be invited to participate in the Physical Agility Test. Applicants will have two (2) attempts to pass the Physical Agility Test.


1. Stair Climb

  • Equipment: Stair Step Mill, 50 lb weight vest

  • Task: Student will wear a weighted vest and complete 3 minutes on the stairs at a rate of 50-60 steps per minute. Using handrails is not permitted. 

  • Purpose: Simulates cardiovascular endurance and leg strength required for carrying gear and working on the fire ground.

2. Sandbag Shoulder Carry

  • Equipment: 60 lb sandbag

  • Task: Carry the sandbag on one shoulder for 50 feet, switching shoulders at the halfway point

  • Purpose: Builds core stability, shoulder strength, and balance for carrying heavy equipment.

3. Uncharged Hose Drag

  • Equipment: 100ft of 1¾-inch hose with nozzle

  • Task: Drag the hose 100 feet, then pull the hose hand-over-hand to a designated location

  • Purpose: Tests grip strength, lower body power, and endurance for advancing hose lines.

4. Sledgehammer Strikes on a Tire

  • Equipment: 10 lb sledgehammer, large tire

  • Task: Strike the tire 15 times using controlled swings

  • Purpose: Simulates forcible entry movements, improving upper body power and endurance.

5. Ladder Raise

  • Equipment: 24ft Extension Ladder

  • Task: Extend the stationary ladder using the halyard (rope) from the ground to a vertical position and back down 3 consecutive times

  • Purpose: Develops shoulder, back, and grip strength required for ladder deployment.

6. Dummy Drag

  • Equipment: 165 lb rescue dummy

  • Task: Drag the dummy 32ft until across the designated line

  • Purpose: Simulates victim rescue scenarios, testing grip strength, lower body endurance, and total body coordination.

Test Completion Time:

  • Target: 6 minutes

  • Max Allowable: 10 Minutes
