Using Web Search Engines and Directories and Evaluating Web Sources

Assignment:  You will be using various Web Search Engines and Directories to locate Web sites that will be useful for your research assignment.  After completing #1-3 below:

How to Cite Web Documents

General Guidelines for a Web Document within a Scholarly Project or Information Database:  MLA Handbook page 181.

To cite files available on the WWW, give the (1) author's name, last name first (if known - if no author is given, begin the citation with the title of the material, in quotation marks) and  (2) the full title of the work in quotation marks.    (3) Continue with the title of the complete work or project (if applicable), underlined; (4) any version or file numbers; and (5) the date of the electronic document or last revision (if available) next (6) the name of any sponsoring institution or organization. Conclude with (7)  date of access and (8) URL (Internet) address.

Academic, Commercial, Government and Subject Search Engines

 

1.    Go to the COS Search Engine List Web page and search for your topic using the Biology Browser or Scirus  or Librarians' Internet Index Search Engines. List in MLA Format  at least two Web sites or pages that will be useful in your research.

 

 

 

2.    If your topic is in the human health/disease area go to MedlinePlus, a Government Web Site, and use its search engine to search for your topic. List in MLA Format  at least one Web site or page that may be useful in your research.

 

 

 

3.    Go to the COS Search Engine List Web page and select one of the Commercial search engines then search for your topic. List in MLA Format  at least one Web site or page that may be useful in your research and the name of the search engine used.
