  • Opposing Viewpoints - is a series of books designed to present both sides of an issue. Each volume consists of material drawn from books, magazines, newspapers, and position papers. Magazines and Newspapers

  • Many magazines and newspapers can be excellent sources for persuasive papers or speeches. To locate articles that you can use, consult an database or index . Be prepared to spend some time. It is very unusual to find the perfect article in the first source consulted, nor is it usual to find one article that covers both sides of an argument. To argue persuasively it is important to research and know all sides of an issue.  To read persuasive speeches by politicians and other well-known people in specialized fields consult the journal called "Vital Speeches of the Day" located in the Visalia COS Library Periodicals Department on the first floor.
  • A few useful databases and or indexes are InfoTrac, Academic Abstracts, SIRS (Social Issues Resources Series), and the Los Angeles Times Newspaper Fulltext.
  • To obtain articles dealing with both sides of your issue, use the following terms: PRO or CON or DEBAT* or DISCUS* or ARGU* or PERSUA* or OPINION* along with your topic's keywords or subject headings.
  • To obtain articles containing statistical information dealing with your issue, use some of the following terms: CHART* or GRAPH* or STATIST* or TABLE* or FIGURE* or PERCENT* or NUMBER*
