LIBR 101 (Library Research Strategies) Syllabus

Basic Class Information

  • LIBR 101 is a one-credit course that teaches the tools needed for college level research through the use of electronic databases, print resources and the web.
  • There are no prerequisites for this class
  •  Class meets in Library Classroom 203 (Lodgepole Building, 2nd floor) and uses Blackboard between the meetings and for better communication

Course Description

            This class is a basic introduction to the process of doing research: finding information, interpreting it, and putting it to use. The course introduces students to a variety of information sources available, including books, periodicals, databases, and websites. They will also learn how to cite these resources in correct MLA style. The assignments are designed to be relevant to other courses students may be taking.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of the college library, the kinds of materials it includes, and their physical arrangement and organization;
  • Compare and contrast classification systems as an aid in the use of libraries;
  • Deduce valid conclusions regarding the purpose of the library catalog;
  • Solve research problems utilizing major reference sources, both general and specialized;
  • Determine the nature of a source from a citation, use citations to find physical sources and cite sources used for research papers;
  • Evaluate kinds of books and other resources which are needed to research a given subject, including electronically driven reference tools; and
  • Justify the importance of using a variety of research sources.

Students Will Need

  • Computer and internet access. If you do not have a computer at home, they are available in the library.
  • Recommended book for this course is: MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 7th ed. New York: Modern Language Association of America, 2009. There are some copies available in the library, at the reference and the circulation desk.

Come to class and hand in all assignments on time.

Academic Honesty and Integrity

All students are expected to do their own work. Students who plagiarize (cheat) will receive a grade of 0 on the relevant quiz, assignment or final project.

Grades

  •  Assignments: 50%

  • Quizzes: 25%

  • Attendance and Discussion Board participation: 10%

  •  Final project: 15% of final grade

Final Grades

  •  90-100%:       A

  • 80-89%:         B

  • 70-79%:         C

  •  60-69%:         D

  • Below 60%:    F

The instructor reserves the right to alter any of the above when deemed necessary for the welfare of the class.
