Blackboard
What is it and is it for me?
What
is it?
-
Blackboard is a software product for
course management. At COS, the Distance Learning and LISTO budgets pay the
annual subscription costs for Blackboard.
-
COS has our own server to house
Blackboard, but it can be accessed from any computer either on-campus or
off-campus.
-
Blackboard is fairly user friendly,
but some training helps a lot. You do not need to be an Internet
Expert to use it

Blackboard is being used at COS
-
Enhancing
Traditionally Taught Classes
-
Instructors may post
announcements or lecture notes or assignments on Blackboard, post web
sites, post PowerPoint presentations, or make use of the Discussion
board.
-
YOU choose how and
when to use Blackboard to help you teach your subject.
-
Presenting
Hybrid Classes
-
Some instructors use
Blackboard to host part of their class, in addition to videos, on-campus
meetings and other methods that work with their particular subject. If
you course has not been approved already for online delivery, you'll
need to submit a course outline addendum to your division Curriculum
Committee and to the campus-wide Curriculum Committee.
-
Presenting
Totally Online Classes
-
Some instructors have
moved their entire class online to reach students who can't take a
traditional class or whose learning style suits an online environment,
or because the instructor feels he/she teaches better in an online
environment. Again, . If your course has not been approved already for
online delivery, you'll need to submit a course outline addendum to your
division Curriculum Committee and to the campus-wide Curriculum
Committee.
-
Some textbook companies
are also selling class cartridges that have mapped out an entire class
with assignments, test, and other resources. You can plug the cartridge
into Blackboard, adjusting the content to your own teaching methods.
