How To Apply - New Student

 

 Every New Student Needs to...

 
ALL STUDENTS WHO ARE APPLYING FOR VA EDUCATION BENEFITS MUST COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
  • Apply for admissions by completing an application on the COS Website. Individuals should go to www.cos.edu and click on “New and Returning Students”; the website will direct you to the Admissions application and checklist.  
    • Web accessible computers are available in the Sequoia Building - Room 156 or Welcome Center - Room 104
  • Request official copies of your transcripts (including your military transcripts) from every school that you have attended. Have each transcript sent to: 
  • Admissions and records,College of Sequoias, 915 S. Mooney Blvd, Visalia, CA 93277
  • You must take a placement test for Math and English.  Sign up for the Placement Test in the Assessment Office. If you are a new student, you must also complete the New Student Orientation (see “Registration Checklist” for details). 
    • Assessment/Placement tests – Room 157.
  • Contact the Counseling Office to schedule an appointment with a Veterans Counselor. He/She will work with you to create a Student Educational Plan ).
    •  Counseling Office – Room 103. Phone: (559) 730-3741
  • Enroll for courses based on what is indicated on the SEP counselor creates and bring class schedule to COS Veterans Office and complete a semester request for VA ED benefits form.
  • Read, sign, and return the Memo of Understanding.

CHAPTER 30, 33, 1606, 1607 STUDENTS NEED TO... 
  • Complete GI Bill Application 22-1990.  You can pick up an application from the COS Veterans Office or you can apply on-line. Print copy of full application with confirmation for our and your records.
  • Bring a copy of your DD214 member 2 or member 4 to the C.O.S. Veterans Office.
  • Kicker Paperwork (if applicable)
  • CH 1606 only:   Bring your DD2384, Notice of Basic Eligibility, from your unit to the C.O.S. Veterans Office.
  • CH 33 only:  Complete fee deferment form.
CH 33 Transfer Entitlement Benefit (TEB) STUDENTS WILL NEED TO...
  • Complete VA Form 22-1990E.  You can pick up an application from the COS Veterans Office or you can apply on-line.  Print copy of full application with confirmation for our and your records.
  • Provide a letter of authorization from DOD to send with VA Form 22-1990E.
  • Complete fee deferment form. 
CH 35 STUDENTS WILL NEED TO... 
  • Complete VA Form 22-5490 and return it to the C.O.S. Veterans Office
  • Provide a marriage certificate (Spouse only)
  • Provide a birth certificate (Dependents only)
CH 31 STUDENTS WILL NEED TO...
  • Complete the initial application VA Form 28-1900 and submit to VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service. 
  • If you have a current VA Form 28-1905 from the Veterans Administration bring it to the COS Veterans Office and complete the COS Fee Authorization Form. If your VA Form 28-1905 is not up to date please contact your Veterans Case Manager.
  • Bring a copy of your DD214 member 2 or member 4 to the C.O.S. Veterans Office.
  • Complete fee deferment form.
 

 AVIATION PROGRAM

 
 

 CERTIFICATE

 
  • In addition to step above, students pursuing a Certificate Program need to read and sign a Certificate Program Memo and return to the Veterans Service Office.

 POST ACADEMY

 
  • In addition, students pursuing a POST Academy Certificate need to read and sign a POST Academy Memo and return to the Veterans Service Office.
  • Note:  A Student Educational Plan is required for POST Academy students who receive VA educational benefits.
