MISSION

The DRC assists students to maximize their potential and prepare for productive life after college. DRC services are individualized to aid each student's independence, productivity and self-esteem. Services are provided to enhance students' access to, and success in, all classes and activities offered at COS. The DRC supports the mission of COS through district community collaboration.
 

PHILOSOPHY

The Disability Resource Center joins with College of the Sequoias in an effort to maximize each student's intellectual, occupational, cultural, and social potential. College of the Sequoias' commitment to students with physical, communication, psychological and learning disabilities is evidenced by the growth of the Disability Resource Center since its inception in 1975.
The worth and self-esteem of the student is paramount in this individualized service delivery system, with independence and productivity being common goals. An attempt is made to assist students in making a smooth transition into college and from college to universities or work settings. Services are provided to enhance students' access to and success in all classes and activities offered at COS. Additionally, continued development of awareness and understanding of people/students with disabilities by the campus and local communities serves to facilitate in all areas of life.
 

PROGRAM GOALS

  • Promote independence and self-sufficiency so that students can maintain active and fulfilling lives.
  • Provide support services, special facilities/equipment, and special classes/curriculum to enrich students’ lives and assist them in achieving their goals.
  • Assist in provision of cooperative programs to minimize impediments for the students served.
  • Enhance an awareness of the needs as well as the abilities of individuals with disabilities.
  • Assist in the provision of a full range of opportunities - academic, cultural and social - to prepare the student for further educational and/or employment opportunities.
  • Serve as a liaison with agencies to enhance services to students.
  • Serve as a resource for students with disabilities at COS and for the community.
  • Provide assistance regarding job placement/employment opportunities and/or further educational opportunities.
  • Foster self-advocacy and independence in the students we serve.
