  • Family Doctor - All of the information within family doctor.org has been written and reviewed by physicians and patient education professionals at the American Academy of Family Physicians. The information is regularly reviewed and updated.  Topics include health topics, drug information, list of family physicians, and self care.
  • Federal Health and Human Services Hot Topics  - Covers topics such as adoption, teen pregnancy, cancer and many other topics.
  • Hardin Meta Directory of Internet Health Sources - is a "list of lists" - Its purpose is to provide easy access to comprehensive resource lists in health-related subjects. In choosing the independent, subject-specific lists in this directory, many sites in each field have been look at, and the lists have been chosen are most frequently cited by people in the field, thus providing a rudimentary form of peer evaluation.
  • Healthfinder (tm) - a gateway consumer health and human services information web site - (from the United States government) "Healthfinder™ can lead you to selected online publications, clearinghouses, databases, web sites, and support and self-help groups, as well as the government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce reliable information for the public."
  • HealthWeb - Provides links to evaluated, non-commercial, health-related, Internet-accessible resources selected by librarians and information professionals at leading academic medical centers in the Midwest.
  • National Library of Medicine Databases
    • MEDLINEPlus- A goldmine of good health information from the world's largest medical library that is authoritative and up to date. MEDLINEplus has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 600 diseases and conditions. There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials. MEDLINEplus is updated daily.  There is no advertising on this site, nor does MEDLINEplus endorse any company or product.
    • PubMED - PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 14 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources. These journals may require you to subscribe or pay a fee in order to view the full text of an article. Be sure to use the help section of this web site if you have never searched MEDLINE before.

  • National Insitutes of Health:  Office of Dietary Supplements  - The U.S. Office of Dietary Supplements provides research, safety and health information to include; fact sheets on dietary supplements and dietary reference intakes & recommended dietary allowances.  Searchable

  • Adam Medical Encyclopedia (MedlinePlus) - The Adam Health Illustrated Encyclopedia includes over 4,000 articles about diseases, tests, symptoms, injuries, and surgeries. It also contains an extensive library of medical photographs and illustrations.
  • Complete Home Medical Guide - from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
  • The Merck Manual - online home edition.  Short descriptions of medical terms and diseases.
  • Multilingual Glossary of Medical Terms - Choose the Browse by Language Link. On this page you will have to choose your look-up language from Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish.. After your selection, you can call the alphabetical list of medical terms or the glossary in the language you have selected. You can switch between the glossary, the list and the multilingual lemma collection. The multilingual lemma collection gives you the translations of the term in the seven other languages. There is also an English dictionary available that gives you the English definition of all terms.
  • On-line Medical Dictionary
  • Who Named It?  A Biographical Dictionary of Medical Eponyms - This biographical dictionary of medical eponyms is an attempt "to present a complete survey of all medical phenomena named for a person, with a biography of that person. Eventually, this will include more than 15,000 eponyms and more than 6,000 persons." There are currently more than 4,000 eponyms described, with biographical material on close to 2,000 people. The site can be searched or browsed by person's last name, category of medical condition, or eponym. There is also a list of women whose names have been used to name medical conditions.

  • CancerSource - Provides information on all varieties of the disease and is presented at three levels. You can learn about the basic biology of cancer, get the latest news on the subject, and find opportunities to chat live with
    cancer specialists. The site also offers a dictionary, drug guide, and online support groups.

  • National Cancer Institute - Contains information on specific types of cancer, cancer statistics, clinical trials, and research and funding
  • OncoLink: A University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center Resource - OncoLink has been established with the following objectives: 1.Dissemination of information relevant to the field of oncology, 2.Education of health care personnel, 3.Education of patients, families, and other interested parties, and 4.Rapid collection of information pertinent to the specialty.
  • 10th Report on Carcinogens - The biennial report of the National Toxicology Program provides information on 228 substances known or reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens. Among those included are dust, steroidal estrogens, and some anticancer drugs. Users may search or click on alphabetical entries.   • American Council on Science and Health -The American Council on Science and Health, Inc. (ACSH) is a consumer education consortium concerned.  It provides information on issues related to food, nutrition, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, lifestyle, the environment and health. ACSH is an independent, nonprofit, tax-exempt organization.
  • Consumer and Patient Health Information Section - Links provided by The Consumer and Patient Health Information Section (CAPHIS) of the Medical Library Association.
  • Easy-to-read Health and Medical Information - Links to health information for the layperson on common illnesses and conditions. The information linked to is in formats that are easy to reproduce, and this is an excellent source of materials for people with limited reading skills. About twenty-five of the links are to information in Spanish. The sites were chosen by health professionals from the staff at the National Networks of Libraries of Medicine.
  • FirstGov for Consumer Health - This large collection of links to federal health resources includes information on aging, choosing quality health care and health insurance, diseases, drugs, health risks, prevention, medical procedures, nutrition, product recalls, referral services, smoking and tobacco, travel health, women's health, and more. From the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
  • Household Products Database:  Health and Safety Information on Household Products - developed and maintained by the National Library of Medicine.  This database links over 4,000 consumer brands to health effects from Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by the manufacturers and allows scientists and consumers to research products based on chemical ingredients. The database is designed to help answer the following typical questions: (1) What are the chemical ingredients and their percentage in specific brands?  (2) Which products contain specific chemical ingredients? (3) Who manufactures a specific brand? How do I contact this manufacturer? (4) What are the acute and chronic effects of chemical ingredients in a specific brand?
  • MayoClinic - Provides useful and up-to-date health information and tools that reflect the expertise and standard of excellence of Mayo Clinic. A team of Web-publishing professionals works side by side practicing medical experts to produce this site.  This unique collaboration,  gives you access to the experience and knowledge of the more than 2,000 physicians and scientists of Mayo Clinic
  • Medical Library - From Medem Network provides a full range of patient information from a number of physicians' professional societies.
  • Stanford University Health Library - A collection of resources from the free consumer health library of Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Includes links to Web sites and electronic books (e-books) on women's health, children's health, men's health, diseases and disorders, and drug information and therapies. An online video collection addresses current medical treatments, cancer supportive care, and other health topics. The library will also prepare personalized, custom research packets (no initial cost).

Evaluating Health Information

  • CDC Health-Related Hoaxes - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offer facts and relevant links with accurate information to refute rumors and hoaxes circulating in the media and via e-mail. Breast cancer caused by underarm deodorant, air-borne HIV, hantavirus on soda cans, and children dying of heroin overdoses after being stuck by discarded needles on playgrounds are examples of current hoaxes and rumors.
  • Criteria for Assessing the Quality of Health Information on the Internet:  Policy Paper - The Health Summit Working Group selected, defined, ranked, and evaluated seven major criteria for assessing the quality of Internet health information: credibility, content, disclosure, links, design, interactivity, and caveats (advisories).

  • FirstGov for Seniors - This site provides access to all government agencies that provide services for seniors (for example, Social Security, Medicare and Veterans Affairs). The idea is for seniors to be able to search for government information and programs that meet their needs without having to know the name of the agency responsible for that service. For instance, on the "General Health Resources" page, there are links to Medicare's "Participating Physician Directory" and "Prescription Drug Assistance Programs" information as well as FDA and other government (and some non-governmental organizations) consumer guides targeted toward seniors
  • A Guide to California Medicare HMOs - This Web site is a free public service for California Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and friends. This site provides information about the Medicare program in California, as well as the options for covering health costs not paid for by Medicare.  If you're thinking of joining a Medicare HMO, this guide can help you choose the plan that is best for you. If you are already enrolled in a Medicare HMO, you can use this guide to find out about other plans in your area that may provide better value.
  • InfoAging - A searchable site presenting advances and news in aging research, focusing on aging-related diseases, biological causes of human aging, and a healthier lifestyle. The research spotlights cellular aging, telomeres, longevity, caloric restriction, stems cells, Alzheimer's findings, the food pyramid controversy, geriatrics, and more.

  • Merck Manual for Geriatrics - A free full-text geriatric care manual, this 3rd edition (Fall 2000) includes information ranging from health care funding and quality of life to injuries, diseases and care issues as they particularly effect seniors.   • National Alliance for the Mentally Ill - This organization is composed of family members of; or people with, neurobiological disorders ("NBD", formerly known as 'mental' illnesses) like schizophrenia, manic depression, major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder , borderline personality disorder, etc. This Web Site is dedicated to helping each other and provides very good and practical information.

  • EthnoMed Home Page - The EthnoMed site contains information about cultural beliefs, medical issues and other related issues pertinent to the health care of recent immigrants to the Pacific Coast area, many of whom are refugees fleeing war-torn parts of the world.
  • Health:  MSU Global Access - Use the search section to the left to locate health information by country and language.  For example a search for the country of Argentina and English language provided led to a health profile of the country. ( This is not available for every country but when it is it is very useful!) Health information comes in a variety of forms. In addition when you need information about health conditions in another country, the location of medical centers, details of another health care system, or access to international organizations involved in health-related issues, check the resources assembled by MSU Global Access.
  • Health Links from the Office of Minority Health Resource Center - Provides great links about demographics and a variety of health issues from such sites as MEDLINE and the U.S. Census Bureau
  • Hmong  Health Website - This site provides basic health information in English and Hmong. It includes a health dictionary, information about traditional healing, library resources, and links to Hmong Web sites, as well as general family health information. Managed by medical librarians with the Northern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center, and sponsored by the National Library of Medicine.

  • SPIRAL: Selected Patient Information Resources in Asian Languages  - SPIRAL provides consumer health information in Chinese, Hmong, Khmer, Korean, Laotian, Thai, and Vietnamese. Pamphlets are also available in English so that health care providers will understand the contents. Browsable by language or subject. The site also includes links to Asian and Pacific Islander health resources.   • The UC Atlas of Global Inequality - "This Atlas explores the interaction between global integration (globalization) and inequality, and provides maps, graphics and data." The site includes a database and "maps examining some aspects of material inequality, life and death, global connectedness ... economic globalization." and health.   • MEDLINEplus:  Native American Indian Health - This is the best place to start your research on any aspect of Native American Indian health or disease.
  • American Indian Health Central - Based in Los Angeles, California. Dedicated to providing health information, education, referral and outreach services to both American Indians and non-Indians. Forum, chat, links.
  • Indian Health Service - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services agency providing healthcare to Native American and Alaskan Native peoples. Scholarships and employment, field office directory, programs, public relations. Numerous downloads and links.

  • DrugDigest - DrugDigest is a noncommercial, evidence-based, consumer health and drug information site dedicated to empowering consumers to make informed choices about drugs, herbs, supplements and treatment options. Features include a page to check for drug interactions, glossary, drug comparison page, and a treatment options page. Searchable.
  • Drug InfoNet - Provides both information and links to areas on the web concerning healthcare and pharmaceutical-related topics. Search for a drug by brand name, manufacturer or generic name.
  • MEDLINEplus: Drug Information - "Information on thousands of prescription and over-the-counter medications is provided through two drug resources -- MedMaster, a product of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the USP DI Advice for the Patient, a product of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP)." Browse by generic or brand name of the drug from an alphabetical index. The results include warnings and side effects of the drug.
  • PDR (Physicians' Desk Reference) - Provides Drug Information based on the FDA approved drug information found in the PDR as well as sections on diseases and clinical trials.
  • RX List; The Internet Drug Index - RxList is a trove of pharmaceutical knowledge with more than 4,000 medications on file, a pharmaceutical discussion board, and an online dictionary of medical jargon. And for anyone interested in alternative medicine, RxList covers a handful of herbal remedies as well.

Reproduction and Infertility

  • Infertility INCIID  - Provides information about infertility, and pregnancy loss, including prevention and treatment such as reproductive surgery, reproductive technologies and infertility medications.
  • Infertility from MEDLINEplus - A wealth of research information.
  • Infertility:  Diagnosis and Treatment - This site was developed by the Reproductive Science Center of the San Francisco Bay Area.  Although this site provides fertility services it does an excellent job of educating the patient on infertility its causes and treatments that are available.
  • Protect Your Fertility - This site, sponsored by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), seeks to provide information about preventable infertility. It describes risk factors and behaviors which can put future childbearing at risk for men and women. There is a link to a searchable directory of ASRM member physicians and many links to other resources on infertility and reproductive medicine.

  • Resolve:  The National Infertility Association - The mission of this organization is to provide "support and information to people who are experiencing infertility and to increase awareness of infertility issues through public education and advocacy." The site features fact sheets about trying to conceive, treatment options, emotional aspects, adoption, pregnancy and parenting, and living childfree. Also includes information about advocacy efforts, male infertility, clinical trials, affordability, and more.

  • Dr. Pribut's Running Injuries Page - A wealth of information from common running injuries, basic biomechanics, sport shoes, strength training and selecting a sports medicine physician
  • SportsMed Web - This web site is designed to provide general medical and sports related health information. The focus is on endurance sports, but there is material here which can benefit all types of athletes. The web site is non-profit and is supported by contributions from several authors.

  • Addiction Search - This website, developed by the organization of the same name, promotes an expansion of the discussion on drug policy and educates the public about alternatives to current drug war policies. The site covers issues such as medical marijuana, racial disparities in the war on drugs, needle exchange, and human rights issues.

  • Club Drugs - Detail-rich site that includes facts and figures, legislation, programs, training and technical assistance, grants and funding, a calendar of events, an abstracts database, and other information on club drugs, including MDMA (ecstasy), GHB (gamma hydroxybutynate), Rohypnol (roofies), ketamine, methamphetamines, and PMA (paramethoxyamphetamine). Also has links to publications on enforcement, consequences of use, and research.
  • College Drinking:  A Call to Action:  Changing the Culture of Drinking at U.S. Colleges - This site was developed to:  (1) Provide research-based information about the nature and extent of dangerous drinking to high school and college administrators, students, parents, community leaders, policymakers, researchers, and members of the retail beverage industry; (2) Offer recommendations to college and university presidents on the potential effectiveness of current strategies to reverse the culture of drinking on campus; and (3) Offer recommendations to the research community, including NIAAA, for future research on preventing hazardous college student drinking.
  • Dual Diagnosis Web Site - Dual Diagnosis refers to co-occurring Mental Illness, Drug Addiction and/or Alcoholism in various combinations.This site is designed to provide information and resources for service providers, consumers, and family members who are seeking assistance and/or education in this field.
