How to obtain a GED

 

The GED tests consist of five test subjects (Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Reading and Math) that cover academic knowledge and skills that are required in a traditional high school curriculum. Below you will find some general information on the GED and where you may obtain one.  COS does not offer GED testing. 

To be eligible, you must:

1.      Be a resident of California and meet any one of the following criteria (check with testing site to confirm as it may change):

        ·         18 years of age or older, or within 60 days of his/her 18th birthday regardless of school enrollment status;

        ·         Within 60 days of when he/she would have graduated from high school had he/she remained in school and followed 
                  the usual course of study (please note that examinees testing under this criteria may not be enrolled in school).

        ·         Be 17 years of age, out of school for at least 60 consecutive days, and provide a letter of request for the test from
                  the military, a post secondary educational institution or a prospective employer

2.      Have Photo ID.  Must be current and include examinee’s name, date of birth, photograph, address and signature. 
         Acceptable identification includes:

        ·         Driver’s licenses issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles

        ·         Identification cards issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles

        ·         Identification cards issued by the military

        ·         Identification cards issued by U.S. or foreign governments

        ·         Passports issued by U.S. or foreign governments

Fees:

The cost is usually $150 for all five (5) tests.  Retests can usually cost between $25-$30 per test.  Check with testing site for current fees.
