Financial Aid Application Process

Here are the steps to apply for federal and state financial aid:


 Step 1

Collect financial related documents for the student and his/her parents if applicable (e.g., tax returns, payroll stubs, bank account statements, etc.) to facilitate the completion of the FAFSA. To learn about the documents you may need to reference, please visit the FAFSA website at

 Step 2

Apply by submitting the FAFSA online at If you would like to request a hardcopy paper-based FAFSA, please contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center by calling 1 (800) 433-3243. The College of the Sequoias’ Financial Aid Office also has a limited supply of hardcopy paper-based FAFSA applications.
The FAFSA should be completed as soon as possible after January 1, 2015. The California priority deadline for submission of the FAFSA is March 2, 2015. The College of the Sequoias’ Federal School Code is 001186.
California Residents Only: If you wish to be considered for a Cal Grant, please check with the College of the Sequoias' Financial Aid Office for details. Please note that a FAFSA needs to be submitted in order to be considered for a Cal Grant. The deadline for submission of the FAFSA is March 2, 2015.

 Step 3


​​Once you have submitted the FASFA, a Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent to you electronically if you provided an email address on the FAFSA, or via U.S. mail if you did not provide an email address on the FAFSA. Once you receive the SAR, please review it carefully to ensure that all of the information on the report is accurate. If corrections or updates need to be made, please login into the FAFSA website or send the updated SAR via U.S. mail to the address listed on the SAR. 


 Step 4

Activate your College of the Sequoias issued email account ( All communication from the College of the Sequoias’ Financial Aid Office will be sent to the student via email. Email messages will include information on the student’s eligibility for federal and state financial aid, the actual awards and dollar amounts awarded to the student, and payments dates.

 Step 5

Await the arrival of the COS Debit Card via U.S. mail. All students who may be eligible to receive federal and/or state financial aid will be sent a COS Debit Card. The COS Debit Card is required to receive financial aid. Once the student receives the COS Debit Card, please follow the instructions to activate the card online. Students may either choose to receive their financial aid via the COS Debit Card or may opt for other refund preferences. For more information, please visit the COS Debit Card website at
