COS Football Head Coach

Irv Pankey

A former professional football player with outstanding credentials, Irv Pankey returns for his 16th season on the COS football staff and his first year as head coach.  Irv was appointed head coach in late May, replacing Robert Dougherty, who left the college.

The 55-year-old Pankey was originally hired by COS in 1998 as assistant football coach and physical education instructor. He had been the Assistant Head coach the past several years.

Pankey is a native of Aberdeen, Maryland and attended high school there. He played at Penn State University. In college, Pankey was twice named to the all-Big East Conference team as an offensive lineman. He was also second team all-American as a senior, and was the 50th player drafted in 1980 by the National Football League.

Irv played offensive tackle for 13 years in the NFL, 11 with the Los Angeles Rams and two more with the Indianapolis Colts.
Pankey's coaching experience includes a year at Penn State as a graduate assistant and a year at Cornell University, before coming to COS.

Irv inherits a COS team which won its first four games last year, only to lose its final six and finished 4-6 overall.
"If you work hard every day in any thing you do in life, you will be better at it. Our philosophy is, never let anybody out-work you," Pankey said.

Pankey and his wife Kelly have three children, all of whom are college graduates. Son Kevin played football at COS.
