​Beginning/Conversational ASL (American Sign Language)

Learn about and embrace a culture so unlike your own! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to use your hands and face to communicate rather than your voice? If so, then this class is for you! This class will teach you the fundamentals of American Sign Language. You will learn basic visual/gestural communication skills and grammatical structures with an emphasis on receptive and expressive skills to enable you to engage in basic conversations with Deaf people. Topics will include: basic grammar and vocabulary, finger spelling, numbers and cultural information related to the Deaf community. Explore a community with a vast richness in culture and history. Sign up with a friend and you will have the opportunity to practice your skills outside of the classroom which will yield better results in your fluency!
 
This is a not-for-credit course. As such, you will not earn units and the class will not be reflected on your banner schedule or on transcripts.
